Ontario Toxics Reduction Act

toxic_reduction.jpgOntario’s Toxics Reduction Act (TRA) applies to facilities in Ontario, Canada, where manufacturing activities involve toxic substances listed in the National Pollutant Release Inventory (NPRI) Notice issued under the Canadian Environmental Protection Act.  Manufacturing facilities that meet reporting criteria under NPRI or Ontario Regulation 127/01 are required to account, plan and report under the TRA and Ontario Regulation 455/09.  Specifically, the facilities that meet the prescribed criteria are required to:

  • Track and quantify the toxic substances they use and create
  • Develop plans to reduce the use and creation of these substances
  • Make a summary of the plan available to the public

The Solenis manufacturing plant located in Burlington, Ontario, met the NPRI and TRA reporting criteria for Sodium Nitrite and Ethylene Glycol in 2014.  In order to meet applicable regulations and align with the Solenis Responsible Care objectives of ensuring compliance and reducing our environmental impact, a Toxic Substance Reduction Plan for the Burlington plant was submitted to the Ministry of the Environment and Climate Change (MOECC) in December 2015.  A summary of our Toxic Substance Reduction Plan is available by clicking here.
