TopScreen™ Biowax-based Barrier Coatings

TopScreen biowax-based barrier coatings are the solution to consumer demand for paraffin-free, environmentally friendly, paper packaging. Derived from vegetable oils, these functional biowax barrier coatings are free from harmful mineral oil saturated hydrocarbons (MOSH) and mineral oil aromatic hydrocarbons (MOAH), making them an excellent choice for food-grade paper packaging applications. And, paper and board treated with TopScreen biowax barrier coatings are repulpabable, recyclable and compostable, making the coatings a better environmental choice than paraffin-based wax coatings.

In addition to providing superior oil, grease and water resistance and control of water vapor transmission rate, TopScreen biowax barrier coatings offer many appealing features and benefits. For example, they:

  • Contain up to 100 percent bio-based content derived from vegetable oils
  • Are free of mineral oil saturated hydrocarbons (MOSH) and mineral oil aromatic hydrocarbons (MOAH)
  • Are recyclable and repulpable
  • Are compostable, with EN 13432 certification for most packaging applications
  • Comply with global food contact standards, including BfR XXXVI, FDA 21 CFR § 176.170, and GB9685-2016
  • Require minimal switching effort and can be used with existing wax applicators

Market demand for environmentally sustainable paper packaging has grown over the years, spurring paper and board producers to eliminate their use of paraffin-based barrier coatings. TopScreen biowax-based barrier coatings are derived from renewable resources, which satisfy consumer demand for eco-friendly products while helping papermakers comply with environmental regulations.

Food packaging must provide effective oil, grease and water resistance and water vapor transmission rate without exposing consumers to unsafe chemicals. TopScreen biowax barrier coatings deliver superior performance and are free from harmful chemicals, making them an ideal choice for a variety of food packaging applications, including:

  • Corrugated board for fruit, vegetables and frozen fish
  • Fast food wraps and containers
  • Candy wrappers
  • Meat and cheese wrapping paper
  • Bread bags

TopScreen biowax-based barrier coatings can be applied on existing wax applicators, including roll, curtain and cascade coaters. The coatings are typically applied at temperatures between 80 and 160 °C, depending upon the grade, and can be adapted to specific requirements for water repellency, fat resistance, water vapor transmission rate, gloss, heat sealability, release properties and viscosity.
