In the late 1970s, Legionella, the bacteria responsible for outbreaks of legionellosis and the potentially fatal pneumonia-type illness, Legionnaires’ disease, was first identified. Since then, industrial operations have become more aware of the risks associated with Legionella bacteria. The typical industrial water systems that are prone to Legionella growth include evaporative cooling towers, hot and cold water distribution systems, air conditioning or humidifier systems, and industrial process systems.
In addition to health risks to workers, legionellosis outbreaks can have serious financial implications for industrial operations, ranging from loss of production due to plant shutdowns, damage to the company brand, and in some regions of the world, legal fines.
