PerForm SP advanced retention and drainage aids provide superior retention, drainage and formation. This family of patented products is useful for a variety of paper grades, including neutral and alkaline-coated fine paper, uncoated fine paper, white top, recycled board, and tissue and towel.
PerForm SP advanced retention and drainage aids are formulated with an anionic organic polymer with a three-dimensional structure. These novel products combine the drainage benefits of traditional microparticles—like silica and bentonite—with the fines and filler retention capabilities of micropolymer technologies.
The high charge and small size of the organic polymer make PerForm SP products more effective than other commercially available retention aids and drainage aids. The products provide a controlled, stable response that allows papermakers to reduce operating costs.
In addition to cost savings, these retention and drainage aids deliver benefits including:
Notably, the latest generation of PerForm SP retention and drainage aids offer a 5 to 10 percent improvement in retention and a 10 to 15 percent improvement in drainage compared to prior PerForm SP products.
PerForm SP advanced retention and drainage aids are formulated with an organic polymer that interacts with cationic sites on fibers, fines and fillers to form microflocs. These microflocs provide retention but enable higher levels of drainage compared to traditional flocculants, which create larger flocs that are more difficult to dry.
Cationic sites are commonly provided by additives such as alum, polyaluminum chloride (PAC), cationic flocculants, cationic starch and/or polyamide wet-strength resins. In some programs, cationic flocculants are used in addition to, or in place of, alum or PAC to provide additional cationic sites to boost performance.
Customers using PerForm SP advanced retention and drainage aids realize significant cost savings with the program. One paper producer used the PerForm SP7200 advanced retention and drainage aid in combination with the PerForm VMax 1000 mixing and injection system to improve polymer delivery. Conversion to this combination yielded benefits including:
